Recipe No 556 curry Original 2015 Adapted 2026

Sri Lankan chicken curry

This is a flavoursome Sri Lankan curry which is easy to make and doesn’t take hours to cook. Makes for a great mid-week meal, especially if the mother-in-law is over for dinner. We serve ours with steamed green beans which is likely not very traditional, but it pairs well and reduces the calories. Of course, basmati rice makes for a fuller accompaniment and soaks up the sauce nicely.

Fine-grained control

Scale to any size.

Most recipe sites let you double the serves. Modernist·Recipes lets you scale by any factor you like. Weight and volume, so you don’t have to get out the kitchen scales for casual scaling requirements.

Scaling is incredibly flexible. Want the recipe at 320 g per portion instead of 240? Set serving size and the rest follows. Need to use up exactly 1280 g of chicken? Pick that ingredient, enter the amount, and everything else scales to match.

Keeping things together

Ingredients without repetition.

The modern recipe format is not longer a disconnected list of ingredients and instructions. The modernist format is a sequence of processes—each a bundle of ingredients joined to the procedures that act on them. Lettered groups, numbered steps.

Each section is neatly oganised unit of work. Your prep is organised because you know which ingredients belong together. No scrolling back to the top to remember how much pandan. Long recipes stay legible. Short recipes stay short.

Accurate nutrition

Accurate nutrition in the format you’re used to.

Every ingredient is matched to a comprehensive ingredient reference, and the layout is automatically formatted to your national standard.

To make the values even more accurate, we use an applied-heat algorithm to detect if the ingredient starts out raw and ends up cooked.

All of it scales with the serving size, and changes live as you tinker. Even the recipes you import are enhanced with nutrition values.

Shopping made easy

A shopping list should not be a chore.

Every recipe builds and maintains its own shopping list. Items are organised by section and multiple items of the same kind are combined into a single total.

Items you always have on hand can be marked as pantry items, which are automatically excluded from the list. You can add items that are not in the recipe, so you have all your shopping on one list.

The list can be sent directly to your mobile. You can checkoff items in-store to keep track. It works without an internet connection, so you’re never stranded.

For people who write recipes

Making the hard parts easy.

Working with your recipes has never been easier. Volume-to-weight conversions, customised measurement units, inline editing, experimental tweaks, categorisation and image management. Just a few of the sophisticated features are seamlessly integrated into the recipe display.

  • A · Conversion

    Volume-to-weight conversion.

Many volumetric measurements are automatically converted to weight using our food database portion sizes. For the rest, there’s a handy UI.

  • B · Localisation

    Units, your way.

The units system is comprehensive, and flexible. Each unit type can be set independently. You can choose °F and grams, if that’s your thing.

  • C · Inline editing

    Quick changes, quickly.

Fixing a spelling mistake or adjusting an amount can be done on the fly. No special editing interface required. It’s a GUI for your recipes.

  • D · Tweaks

    Experimental tweaks.

Tweak your recipes and experiment freely. Your original is never lost. Want to try a version with smoked salt and extra garlic? Make a Tweak and try it out. If you like it, make it your preferred.

  • E · Categorisation

    Find your recipes easily.

Tag your recipe to make it easy to find: cuisine, course, method, diet, general. Filter the library by any combination. Combined with powerful search, a recipe is never hard to find.

  • F · Photo management

A photo (or few) for each step.

Attach an image to any procedure, caption it, and reorder freely. The hero photo is just the first in a stack. Upload directly from your phone and use pro formats such as TIFF.

First-class print stylesheets

A printout that’s more than an afterthought.

On Modernist·Recipes, the printed version is first-class citizen. We’ve taken the time to make it something practical and modern.

Whatever scaling and unit preferences are active on screen are baked into the printed copy, and the QR code links back to the same recipe at the same scaling.

Multiple import options

Import from paper or digital.

On the fly, your recipe is converted to a flexible format, complete with nutrition. The example below is real, not faked.

A personal recipe library is never going to be complete if you can’t import your recipes. Modernist·Recipes makes it easy to bring your recipes together, whatever form they’re in. You can even import the recipes from that old folder of printouts: just take a photo and upload.

You’re not locked in. Recipes can be exported to a beautifully-organised folder, with your images.
